Fear – Where the “H” Did it Come From?

Fear – Where the “H” Did it Come From?

Mary Baker blogpost anxiety, childhood, fear, rabbit hole

It’s taken time (a heap of time) to unpack fear…you scratch the surface to get some resolution or at least figure out where to start and suddenly you (and your glorious mind) are down the proverbial rabbit hole wondering where the heck the bottom is. A scary process to start, but when you take the leap of faith, step out of your comfort zone, get curious (start to unpack it, figure out its origins), you can and will come out the other side not only with a greater sense of self, how you operate, who you are, but a sense of relief that you can successfully manage your fear and it’s triggers and ultimately be more productive in this journey of life.

So….if you are willing, let’s take a little deep dive and have a crack at recognizing where some of our fear originates.

We know that fear is a very real and natural human emotion that is triggered by perceived threats or danger.  It is an evolutionary response lingering from our caveman days when Sabre tooth Tigers or Wooly Mammoths were chasing us. Our fear response back then helped us humans survive by preparing us to respond to potential harm.

A few evolutionary cycles on, modern day humans are born into a complex world (no Sabre Tooth Tigers or Wooly Mammoths to contend with), instead intergenerational patterns of behavior, learnings and trauma all of which sooner or later need to be addressed, cycles broken and learnings undone.

As challenging as it is for me to write it has to be said that for some of us fear can start while in the womb. It’s a proven scientific fact that babies will pick up what their mother is feeling and experiencing, so anything negative that may be happening outside the womb will indeed have a major impact on an unborn child. Often fear will show up in a child’s life as they continue to grow and evolve.

Most of us are aware that fear can be triggered by a variety of things, which we respond to in our own unique way – no two humans are alike.

Physical threats:  such as a dangerous animal or a potential attacker. In these situations, fear helps us prepare for fight or flight (Neanderthal Days).

Emotional threats: such as rejection, humiliation, or loss. These threats can activate the same physiological response as physical threats, even though there is no immediate danger to our physical safety.

Trauma: such as abuse, violence, or natural disasters, can create lasting fear responses that can be triggered by similar situations or stimuli in the future.

Learned behavior: Fear can also be learned through conditioning, such as when a person associates a particular stimulus, such as spiders or heights, with danger and develops a fear response to that stimulus.

Anxiety: Some people may experience fear or anxiety that is not necessarily tied to a specific threat or danger. Anxiety disorders can cause irrational or excessive fear that can interfere with daily life.

Fear is a very real thing, BUT (a big pause) given the opportunity to shine a light on it, BEing brave, investing in yourself, and Believing in YOU, fear can be managed and overcome.

So, is it time to….Face Everything And Rise? (FEAR)

Where in Your Life Do You Feel Safe to Be Yourself?

It’s a simple question—but not always an easy one to answer: Where in your life do you feel truly safe to be yourself? Not tolerated. Not “accepted as long as you stay agreeable.” Not just included. But safe. Safe to speak up. Safe to rest. Safe to not have it all together. Safe to tell […]

Why Support Isn’t Just Nice to Have – It’s What Makes Courage Possible We often talk about self-belief like it’s something you build in isolation. Just try harder, think more positively, do the work. And yes, there’s effort involved. But what’s often missing from that picture is belonging: feeling truly supported, seen, and accepted by […]

When You’re Tired and Still Saying Yes: The Hidden Cost of Overfunctioning

There’s a quiet kind of burnout that creeps in slowly, one boundary-less day at a time.It doesn’t always come from major life events or overwhelming trauma.Sometimes, it comes from saying “yes” when we’re tired. From taking on just one more thing, because we feel like we should. From holding everything together so well on the outside […]
