Nothing Will Change Unless You Do
All month on the podcast we are exploring the concept that “The Hope is in the Work”, meaning that you can have real hope that your life will get better if you do the work. The work to get healthier, more confident and grounded, and more courageous and loving. To stop waiting for everyone else and everything else to be different for you to feel ok.
Because nothing in our lives will really change for the better until we do. Until we get so sick and tired of being sick and tired of status quo, of feeling unhappy, frustrated, anxious and/or depressed. I guess, at times, until we hit our own psychological bottom.
One of the first areas we want to look at is our mindset. How we see ourselves and how we see life. What we believe in and what we don’t. If we have a victim mindset where all the real power is “out there” – meaning what others say and do, or what events have happened – have the power to shape our world. Conversely if we believe WE are ultimately responsible for how our life turns out, then the power shifts to within. WE are therefore in a place of fabulous choice. We CAN make changes to our outlook, which in turn will influence our choice to make changes.
Another driver that truly matters is focusing on our priorities. When we get solid with what truly matters the most and why, we are then motivated to do whatever it takes to make change happen. Now, this often happens when we bump into big life events, such as a health scare or a other event that gets our attention. For instance, if your relationship with your child is hurting, and you want to make sure they have a better childhood than you had, you will be super motivated to make changes to how you parent.
Of course, we also need to get real about what we are actually ready to change. Are we truly “done” working through all of our resistance to change? Our wonderful, rational reasons for “not Yet?” Until we are truly committed and don’t have any more excuses, then we can believe in ourselves enough to really make this happen. We are ready when we are ready. Not a moment before.
When you get serious about making changes for the better, you are truly honoring yourself. Just walking through the process I am talking about here is helping you get ready. To get ready. To do it. To truly start becoming the person you feel deep down you want to be.
